By Sara Bradford of Nourish Real Food

As all of our darlings head back to school there is a looming fear in the back of everyone’s mind. The return to routine is something every parent looks forward to. The chance to show off back-to-school gear is fun for every child. But the ONE thing that never seems to go out of style is the fear of…

But it doesn’t have to be this way. When you’re equipped with the necessities lunchbox magic can happen. All it takes is a few key ingredients, a really cool lunchbox, and a tiny bit of enthusiasm - and you’re off to the races! Sign up for your FREE Think INSIDE the LunchBox e-Book HERE!

Let’s start with that. THIS item can make or break your lunchbox experience. There is NOTHING worse then looking for cheap lids, only to find them melted in the dishwasher the morning you need them. OR when your child comes home from school with a FULL LUNCH - and claims they couldn’t open it. Yikes!

So keep a few things in mind when looking for a lunchbox system:
Is it easy for them to open?
Is a bento system better for keeping track of parts? Or do you prefer to have separate containers with lids?
Is it fun enough for your grade two-er? Or cool enough for your tween-ager?
Is it made from QUALITY MATERIALS that’ll last longer than four months?
Does it spark a little creativity and enthusiasm in YOU?

Currently my favourite vessel is from Canadian brand, Trudeau’s new FUEL line - their BENTO BOX. Dishwasher safe, BPA-Free, clean colour, visually good for youngsters or teenagers (or me), easy to open and close, comes with parts that can come out to send separately. LOVE IT! Their snack bags are pretty cool, too. I get them online HERE.

Real food is awesome. Processed and packaged food isn’t. It’s that simple. And KEEPING it simple is pretty darn important. You don’t need to be a genius or a chef to make a real food school lunch. All you need is some kind of protein (to keep blood sugar stable, building blocks for growing), fat (to build brain power and energy), carbohydrates (veggies, fruits, legumes, grains to fuel with energy and antioxidants), and a treat (optional).

Give yourself permission to send 80% really awesome stuff, and 20% whatever. This will make things easier for you, and allow them to feel like they aren’t missing a thing!

And make a Master List. This is the thing you can put on your fridge and refer to EVERY SINGLE DAY if you need to. It’s the list of ALL the things your kiddies like, love, think are okay. And at a moments notice, will flood you with ideas. (And follow my blog for even MORE ideas, if you like.) For a great, all natural recipe for "Bits & Bites" click here!

Communication is key to making the world spin. Why should it be any different in your own household. Find out what your kids want and like. Ask them why they didn’t eat their lunch. Ask them what vegetable they want that day. Let them help in the prep or planning. Have them help with the master list. EMPOWER THEM. It will come back to you in spades.

This lunchbox packing thing doesn’t have to be dreadful. For more ideas and inspiration check out my upcoming e-lunchbox-book, follow me on Twitter and Instagram or join the 30-Day Lunchbox Challenge on Sept. 15th. And get yourself to Bradshaws for some wicked-fun lunchbox gear.
