Happy Birthday! Abeego just celebrated their ninth anniversary (read to the end to find out more exciting news for Toni and her team)! In 2008 Toni, nutritionist turned entrepreneur, invented Abeego, the original beeswax wrap. Abeego "picks up where the peel left off" keeping food fresh and protecting it while allowing it to breath at the same time. Abeego is made with Beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil infused into a hemp and organic cotton cloth so it is totally natural, compostable and antibacterial!

We were so excited to have Toni answer a few questions about her growing business and lifestyle...
Bradshaws: What inspired you to create Abeego?
Toni: I created Abeego in 2008, right around the time the media picked up on the dangers of BPA. I was working in a health food store and mothers were asking me how they could wrap their kids lunch without plastic...So I decided to invent a natural solution. I wanted to create an entirely plastic-free product. I looked back in history to see how we stored food before plastic wrap. Different things were used, birch bark was used, hide coated in beeswax, banana leaves, palm leaves. I discovered that they all had one thing in common, they were all natural and they were all breathable.
Bradshaws: You have come a long way with Abeego since then. What advice to you have for young female entrepreneurs?
Toni: You are powerful and the lens you see the world through matters. Go and change the world, we need you.
Bradshaws: What do you like to do in your downtime (if you get any)?
Toni: I have a small garden and live on the West coast (of Canada) so we enjoy something fresh all year round. It's important that my 3 year old daughter understands the essence of Keep Food Alive so every minute in the garden with her is the best time spent.
Bradshaws: We love passing on the knowledge of real food to the next generation and empowering kids at Bradshaws too, it is so very important!
Bradshaws: Do you have any favourite Canadian getaways or vacation spot?
Toni: My husband's family has a beautiful A-frame cottage on Folly Lake in Nova Scotia. We visit every August and fill our days swimming in the lake, picking wild blueberries and devouring fresh lobster. I could spend my entire summer there.
Bradshaws: How lovely! That sounds so idyllic and delicious!
Bradshaws: If you could choose 3 things from the Bradshaws Healthy Living department what would they be and why?
Toni: I love simplicity in the kitchen. I require an excellent knife, a cast iron pan and a pair of stainless steel tongs. However, there are a few things on my wish list!
1. I've been in love with Mortier Pilon since I met them in NY. Their kombucha jar has been in my sights.
2. I love crushed garlic but can't stand cleaning a garlic crusher so I just chop it when a recipe calls for crushed garlic. The design of the Joseph Joseph Garlic Rocker is so logical I think I might finally get to have crushed garlic.
Bradshaws: Ugh, us too! This compact set is so handy to keep at work or in your lunch bag for when you need it, and it's great for kids too! These are all such great choices Toni, thank you for sharing! And they are actually some of the most popular items in our Healthy Living section right now. We are definitely seeing a shift in the kitchen to simple and healthy.
